ISLAND OF FREEDOM
Along the lockdown we were aware of perimeters, more than ever.
The perimeter of our apartments, or for the lucky ones the limits of our houses, have been the place of reclusion for the last months. Thus, Architecture is about limits, perimeters and enclosed spaces where security, freedom and life unfolds.
By expanding the perimeter, we could envision a new urbanism. A new model for the city that was already necessary before COVID-19 and has been obvious along the pandemic.
Our DESIRED SPACES is a new urban structure added on top of the existing city, where nothing build is changed and no physical limits are built, but some non-written principles are established in a selected areas across the city.
Those newly establish perimeters act as an urban structure where some conventions are flipped: in front of car privilege, kids and life on the street is encouraged; instead of asphalt, greenery is improved; instead to be constantly tracked, freedom rules; instead of measures for restricting the movement, free movement in the public space of the perimeter is set up.
We would like to envision a new urban structure for an un-built environment: islands of freedom, based on mutual respect, where you can move and meet. A new form of the city that enlarge the architectural perimeter to an urban scale. This new urbanism could evolve in time, and more islands could be added in the future, the shape and size could vary.
